How to Check EPF Balance of Private Trust
In case of EPF contribution, exempted establishment or private trust, goes to company managed trust instead of employee provident fund institution, only company managed trust can disclose employee’s PF account balance. There is no common method of checking PF balance when it comes to EPF accounts maintained with exempted entities. EPFO does not provide passbook facility for members of exempted organizations.
As per the Employees’ Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952, some employers can operate their own PF schemes for their employees. Exempt organizations are large companies like Godrej, HDFC, Nestlé, Wipro, TCS, Infosys etc. which have in-house EPF trusts and are exempted from contributing their EPF funds to EPFO. These exempted entities can manage the EPF corpus with their own trusts. However, these trusts are expected to give higher returns than EPFO-managed funds. The same rules for EPF contribution to EPFO apply to these trusts as well.
Employees of such private trusts can check their EPF balance online in following 4 ways
1 : Check your PF Slip or Payslip: Most of the big organizations provide pay slips to their employees through internal email. Employees can check their payslip for EPF account balance. Some companies provide EPF slips in addition to salary slips. In that slip, employees can find their monthly contribution as well as their EPF account balance.
2 : Check the company’s employee portal: Most of the big companies maintain a company website where employees can log in and check their EPF account balance in the EPF section. Wipro and TCS are examples of companies that provide online facility to check one’s EPF account balance and get PF statement.
3 : Check with the HR department of the company: Employees approach the HR department of the company as it deals with the PF of the employees and is more able to provide the relevant details.
4 : Track your contributions: Employees can keep track of their monthly contributions by checking their pay slips and thus calculate the annual EPF balance. Use the interest rate prescribed by EPFO for calculating EPF interest. Keep in mind, a fixed amount (up to Rs. 1,250 per month) goes into the EPS account.
How to Check EPF balance online for Inactive Accounts
As per the notification issued by the government in November 2016, dormant accounts will also continue to earn interest and will no longer be classified as dormant. EPFO had stopped paying interest on dormant accounts since 2011. But once the new amendment comes into effect, all inactive accounts will earn interest at the rate of 8.5% per annum. The contribution will be made till you reach the age of 58 years. Date of Withdrawal whichever is earlier.
Earlier, accounts were deactivated mainly due to two reasons – cumbersome procedures involved in EPF transfer and employees preferring to open new accounts while changing jobs. The communication gap between an individual’s current and previous employer also contributes largely to this. In cases where employees are unable to track the details of their old dormant accounts, they can approach the EPFO help-desk and transfer the balance in those accounts to the current account.
